replace chiller

Greenland was selected as the prime contractor to demolish and reconstruct the Chilled Water Plant at the Martinsburg, WV VA Medical Center under a $5.4M Design Assist, best source selection contract. The project included replacing pipes, pumps, three centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, and all associated controls systems. In addition, Greenland self-performed a handful of duties:

  • Design assistance
  • Quality control
  • Project management
  • Safety management
  • Site supervision
  • Pre/Post TAB services
  • Commissioning
  • Startup
  • Owner training

The chilled water plant infrastructure was originally designed to be replaced in phases, which would have extended the construction period significantly. chiller replacement construction companyGreenland provided a solution that allowed our team to completely demolish the existing chiller plant while maintaining the utilities throughout the shortened construction period.  It also allowed unobstructed access for demolition, installation and start-up. The entire electrical system was demolished and replaced with new wiring, switch gear, and motor control centers.  The centerpiece of this this project was a premium-efficiency chiller plant, all designed to minimize overall plant kW/ton during a wide range of operating conditions. The systems selected included:

  • Variable-speed pumping
  • Low KW/ton IPLV chillers
  • Chiller plant management controls

Even with some unforeseen site conditions which delayed the cooling tower foundation work, we were providing the campus chilled water services a month ahead of schedule. Beneficial use of the new chiller plant was provided after just six months of construction and the entire project was substantially complete within 365 calendar days.
